HBO has been re-running the Goldwater documentary that was produced by his granddaughter, CC. The documentary includes interviews with Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, John McCain and others. The film is very interesting, but goes a bit too far in painting Mr. Conservative as a liberal later in life. Goldwater’s social beliefs did move to the libertarian side as his life progressed, but to consider him liberal is cheap and misleading. Barry Goldwater was certainly a maverick in many ways, especially when dealing with members of the “Moral Majority” but his beliefs and values are uniquely small government conservative.
