NRO on Huckabee

The National Review Online calls Huckabee the way we see him:

Unfortunately, what Huckabee offers by way of solutions is a mixture of populism and big-government liberalism; the common theme of his policies is that they are half-baked. If an ill-considered slogan can be used to justify a policy, he is for it. He is a protectionist, because we need to have “fair trade.” He wants to put illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship, because we need them “to do jobs that are going unfilled because nobody here wants to do them.” Energy subsidies and farm subsidies must be increased, because they’re a matter of “national security.”

The Huckabee pile on might be in full effect, but it’s warranted from a small government perspective.

Huckabee on States’ Rights

Here’s more evidence that Governor Huckabee is a big government Republican.  His views on state rights and abortion:

“It’s the logic of the Civil War,” Huckabee said Sunday, comparing abortion rights to slavery. “If morality is the point here, and if it’s right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can’t have 50 different versions of what’s right and what’s wrong.”

“For those of us for whom this is a moral question, you can’t simply have 50 different versions of what’s right,” he said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

Whatever your view on abortion, Governor Huckabee is stating here that some morality should be regulated from the federal government.  That’s something that can’t be considered as small government-friendly.  Would President Huckabee be interested in hearing what the citizens wanted on matters like abortion, or would he just do what he thought was right, based on his morality?

Huckabee on Taxes (Hint: He likes them)

Hat tip to Arkansas Journal for this posting on Mike Huckabee.  In his own words:

Huckabee, A Thinner Big Government Republican

Mike Huckabee lures you in with his quick wit and charm.  He’ll mention that he’s anti-abortion and pro-gun ownership.  He’ll even tell you about how he lost over 100 pounds, but he won’t tell you that his not quite as good at cutting fat as an elected official.  In fact, a presidential ticket with Mike Huckabee may continue the longstanding tradition of big government Republicans occupying the Executive Branch.

But, don’t just take my word for it.  Richard Viguerie, author of Conservatives Betrayed, called him a wishy-washy Republican for his economic views.  The Club for Growth’s economic report on Huckabee paints the picture of a taxer and spender.  Authors at the American Spectator and National Review also had some bones to pick with Huckabee.  Even this author pointed out his desire to have a national ban on smoking.

A new poll puts Governor Huckabee in a neck-and-neck race with Mitt Romney in Iowa.   This is dangerous ground for small government conservatives who see that big government GOPers are leading the race in Iowa.  Hopefully, the caucus voters won’t reward their big government ways.

Huckabee: Ban Smoking Nationwide

Here’s a big government conservative talking about how important it is that the federal government ban smoking in the greatest and freest country in the world.
